The Origin Of LCD Display

Nov 02, 2023 Leave a message

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) may not be a new term for many users, but the history of this technology may far exceed our imagination. As early as the late 19th century, Austrian botanists discovered liquid crystals, which means that a substance possesses both liquid fluidity and a certain arrangement characteristic similar to crystals. Under the action of an electric field, the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules changes, which affects their optical properties. This phenomenon is called the electro-optic effect. By utilizing the electro-optic effect of liquid crystals, British scientists created the first liquid crystal display (LCD) in the last century.
The world's first liquid crystal display device appeared in the early 1970s, known as TN-LCD (twisted nematic) liquid crystal display. Despite being a monochrome display, it has still been promoted to fields such as electronic watches and calculators.
